O-RETiNAS 2017 Program

In its second year of grant funding (7th year for CIAN’s Native American focused Research Experience for Teachers programs) CIAN hosted eight educators of Native American students. These teachers participated in an 8-week summer program at the University of Arizona. This included multiple relevant workshops, a course in the College of Education through the Teachers in Industry program, an intensive research laboratory experience, and a unique industry experience at CIAN’s partner companies (Edmund Optics, Lam Optics, and the UA Tech Park).

AISPIRE After-School Program – Visit to the U of A

CIAN has formed a partnership with the San Simon Day School located on the Tohono O’odham reservation in Arizona. Together, San Simon teacher and previous Research Experience for Teachers (RET) participant, Martha Rogers, and CIAN faculty, staff, and graduate students are working to develop and host an exciting after-school program for these students ranging in grades 3 to 8.

The AISPIRE After-School Program (or American Indian Student & Parent Involved Research Experience) is a huge hit with students and parents. Recently, on November 3rd forty-six San Simon students, their teachers, and a few parents traveled from the school to the University of Arizona for a personalized visit. Students visited three CIAN laboratories including the 3D holography lab, the Quantum Nano Optics of Semiconductors (QNOS) lab, and the Multiphoton Microscopy lab. Then the students learned about Optics by creating their own lenses using “Edible Optics” designed and created by CIAN student, Jasmine Sears. Finally, the students learned about kaleidoscopes and created their own kaleidoscopes to take home with them.

Overall, it was an amazing day and visit with the students of San Simon and the AISPIRE program.

Engineering Explorations Day @Columbia University

On March 29, 2014, in collaboration with the Columbia University chapter of the Society of Women Engineers, students at Columbia University participated in a workshop for middle school age girls as part of the spring semester’s program “Engineering Explorations Experience.”

We adjusted our Jell-O waveguide demo to include in the lesson more information on the science of fluorescence and the Bohr model of an atom. The students’ teachers also attended the talk and came to ask us after how to make the demo for their other classes. Overall I’d say it was a successful day for Jell-O ing!

WHAT IS CIAN?

CIAN is the Center for Integrated Access Networks, an Engineering Research Center (ERC) funded by NSF that consists of research labs at 10 different universities. CIAN offers a 10-week summer program designed for undergraduate Native American students interested in exploring optics and photonics, as well as hydrology, soil sciences, atmospheric sciences, or environmental sciences. (See a slideshow of the Summer 2014 IOU-NA at the bottom of this page).

WHAT IS IOU-NA?

IOU_NA_002The Integrated Optics for Undergraduate Native Americans (IOU-NA) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program is designed for Native American students interested in participating in hands-on research opportunities in top laboratories in optics and photonics, as well as in hydrology, astronomy, soil sciences, atmospheric sciences, and environmental sciences. Selected students are paired with a research project complementing their interests and goals.

CSC_5743IOU-NA students will also participate in Native American focused workshops facilitated by University of Arizona’s Native American-serving entities, gain hands-on experience in CIAN’s culturally relevant two-week Native American focused Optics Research Workshop (ORW), attend presentations given by Native American STEM graduate students and faculty, as well as participate in other activities designed to support Native American Undergraduate students.

STIPEND

A stipend of $5,000 is available for successful participation in the full 10-week program. Additionally, travel to and from the university at the start and close of the program will be covered as well as housing on campus during the 10-weeks of the program.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

Native American undergraduates, attending a two or four-year college or tribal college, of all levels majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM). Minimum 3.0 GPA required, on a 4.0 scale. US Citizenship or permanent residency is also required.

2014 SACNAS National Conference Update

Every year the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (aka SACNAS) hosts a national conference in the hopes of gathering various universities, scientific organizations, scientists, researchers, and future researchers together to share ideas and help students that belong in minority ethnic groups get the edge they need to make it in today’s academic world.

This years SACNAS Conference was held in Los Angeles and I was there to experience the conference amenities and share with potential candidates my experience in the REU program I participated in over the summer. The conference ran from October 16th-18th, and was held at the Los Angeles Convention Center, which to my surprise was right next door to the famous Staples Center.

Plant Science Night

Whenever I meet someone new, the conversation always ends up at “So what major are you studying?” As I boldly claim Optical Science, most people give me a smirk and say “So you work with eyes and prescription glasses?” Almost all of the people I have met have never heard of what an Optical Science major is. To spread the word outreach programs expose people to what Optical Science is all about.

Last Friday evening, Ventana Vista Elementary School hosted an annual Plant Science Night where scientific organizations from all over the city of Tucson come together to educate the next generation on the understanding of plants. But as an Optical Science major, what is our role at a Plant Science Night you ask? Because plants don’t have many characteristics on the surface, but under the microscope, millions of organisms are “swimming” microscopically. So as Optical Engineers, my group brought microscopes and lenses to discover movement behind what appears to be an inanimate object. Some of our demonstrations included, a homemade compound microscope made of K’nex and Lego’s, an apparatus where by just placing your phone on the surface, the camera on your phone can act as a microscope (you can even take a picture!), and a microscope that is projected to a 42 inch screen with a water sample taken from the turtle pond on the UofA campus. We brought 3 microscopes, so the other 2 that are not in use are for the students to look at different plant and cacti samples that Dr. Nofziger brought with him.
